SJB Art in the Community
By Olivia Hinchliffe, Grade 12, SJB
The first thought I had when I found out that there was a sculpture class at SJB was, “Chisel, hammer, plaster…WOOHOO!”
In the first week, we learned the basics of movement in and around a sculpture piece. Our first major project was the Biomorphic (the human form with a hole through it so that we could see the environment). After choosing a pose, we started a plasticine 3-D pose. Next we made a concrete mixture which would become our biomorphic. It looked easy at first, but it was very hard to work with. Mine started out the size of a big milk carton; after I was done, I had chiselled so much out of it that it was the length of my hand. I have to admit, it was a great way to relieve stress, but then again it also gave me stress when I tried to get the details in. I was not the only person who had trouble working with it.
The next major project was the bust. When my teacher brought in the one she made, I just looked at it. Then I felt fear and excitement as I looked at my teacher’s sculpture and thought, “I have to get mine to look exactly like my partner?” The many steps were very messy. I ruined two pairs of socks, two pairs of shoes and a pair of my shorts. While we were putting plaster on the back of the head and the face, we had plaster fights and water fights. We had to stay outside to do all this and the students who walked by looked at us like we were crazy. In a sense we were.
When my teacher told us that we were having an art exhibit outside of the school to display our biomorphics and our bust sculptures, everyone was excited. We all had to come up with exhibit names and our own profiles for the booklets. When the day of the exhibit finally arrived, the busts were not easy to carry in, but after figuring out the display and how the food was going to be set up, everything went pretty much smoothly. A couple of girls from my class made a speech about the class and the experiences we enjoyed during the semester.
Having that art exhibit was probably the best thing that happened to all of us. It was a chance for other people to come in and see the blood, sweat and tears we put into making these sculptures. It was also a chance for us to outside of our school community. Taking that class was one of the best decisions I ever made and being a part of the artistic community was the best way to show what I could do. If there are people who love art, or want to do something different, I highly suggest taking a sculpture class.

Steve Jobs will long be remembered for his entrepreneurial savvy, design intelligence, high standards, and ability to predict the future. His 2005 Commencement Address at Stanford is among the best I have heard or read—and I have heard and read a lot!
The older I get the more I do feel that my time is limited. And I’m trying hard to help people discover and heed their own inner voice, heart and intuition. But most importantly, I am working on tempering my own “noise.” How about you?
